A tribute to the cars that have survived over half a century on the island
thanks to the inventiveness of the Cuban people
"Speaking of Cuba is talking about their cars. When in 1959 a young Castro decreed a law to prevent the importation of cars, he could not see the great favor that made us all who are passionate about the 4 wheels. Unwittingly, he bequeathed us a full pre-revolutionary treasure, which now constitutes one of the tourist attractions of the island. For 10 years I had been dreaming of visiting this photographic paradise. It was something I felt inside me. 10 years longing to capture the country through its almendrones (vintage taxis), Buicks, Cadillacs and Studebakers... 10 years were expectation was mixed with desire. I had an intense month to find my treasure. Chasing rumors and opinions, I traveled the island from Viñales to Santiago de Cuba, stopping in dozens of towns and cities. As I forged friendships with enthusiasts and local mechanics, I opened doors normally closed to foreign tourists. Beyond the American classics, Cuba has put me face to face with some of the most iconic cars of Automobile History."
Some photographs show the human side, the people, the environment, cars kept with inventiveness and out of necessity for decades, real gems stored in garages away from prying eyes... Others are pictures of ruins that still dream of becoming the car they once were.
Natural and improvised photographs, no forced elements placed in the frame for the occasion: everything happened by chance. Natural colors, unretouched photographs… The pictures show respectfully reality as it is.
A project that documents with the best pictures my dream, a dream that I invite you to discover.
I LOVE the book! I was very impressed with your consistent updates and the quality of the final product. The photographs show so much more than automobiles and colors and light they capture is breathtaking. I'm very glad you were able to complete this work before the US invasion of Cuba.

Got the book yesterday!! Oh my word just excellent!! Thanks for the amazing piece of art!!
Hello from Portugal, I was happy to have a UPS truck visiting today and I just received my book. Couldn't be happier about it. Very very nice cover materials! My father and I sat looking at it right away, very beautiful!
Today we received a well designed package with a beautifully linen-bound book. I’m sure it will become a fascinating point of conversation whenever fellow gearheads come to visit. It’s very nice that some people still value good workmanship on the artistic side, and the production/fulfillment side!
Degler Studio's history cannot be told without knowing the person behind the lens.
Piotr Degler (1985) grew up in Spain, in the midst of a family of musicians and architects. Equally influenced by art and technology, and motivated by his love for the four wheels, he moved to Turin after graduation to study car design, ending up at Bertone. It is here, in one of the world’s meccas of car design, that he started merging his daily job as a designer with another of his passions, photography.
It is precisely in the combination of photography and his expertise in car design where resides the added value of his images. Degler hands the observer the key features of every design, the masterstrokes imagined by the creator, by reinterpreting through each photo the perspective, lines and volumes, of some of the most important production models and prototypes in the automotive history.
Today, aged only 31, Piotr Degler is considered one of the most respected photographers in the industry, having worked for legendary names such as Top Gear, Zagato and the everlasting Ferrari.
